Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • Optional: shredded cheese, herbs, or spices (e.g. cheddar cheese, fresh chives)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt until well combined.
  3. Cut 1/2 cup (1 stick) of cold unsalted butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 3/4 cup of milk. Stir gently with a fork until the dough begins to come together, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it just a few times until it forms a cohesive ball.
  6. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter or a glass and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each biscuit.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite breakfast toppings!

Keywords: Keep your butter and milk cold for a flaky texture. Avoid overworking the dough to keep the biscuits tender. Experiment with flavors by adding herbs or cheese.
